For $20 more, you can find out if that person is married or divorced, has a criminal record, and what sort of jobs he or she has worked.Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., says she will introduce a "privacy bill of rights" because identity theft and security failures of personal records have become "one of the most important issues facing us as individuals and as a nation."The availability of personal information -- downloadable onto laptop computers, which are increasingly being fitted with fingerprint technology -- is changing the culture in ways that may seem trivial but are really benchmarks for a new society already in its formative stages.A small example: Unbeknownst to the men who date her, Judy runs background checks on all of them, using a private investigator to dig out any "red flags" that would presage troubling behavior. A businesswoman in Southern California, Judy, 50, uses a company called DateSmart, whose client base has boomed in the past five years as more people confront the perils of online dating."I'm glad the information is out there," says Judy, who did not want her last name used because of concerns her suitors would read this article. "The men I'm talking to online are complete strangers. And I have absolutely no knowledge of their character other than what they're saying in their profiles. I need to feel comfortable knowing that they're not an ax murderer. The people you meet might be well dressed, but you never know if they have any criminal history. It's for (my) safety."Background checks are nothing new. What's changed are the speed with which you can obtain them, their relatively small price (some companies advertise free checks) and their growing public acceptance. The information revolution has transformed the background check into a common and casual tool, and those being scrutinized probably don't have a clue. More obvious are the security cameras embedded in nearly every major American city, including New York, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and, yes, San Francisco, where lenses record people's activities in such crime-ridden neighborhoods as Bayview-Hunters Point and the Western Addition. The spread of these cameras is championed by authorities, who say it reduces criminal activity, and criticized by the ACLU, which says the equipment is an unnecessary intrusion into public spaces.Civil liberties groups have joined the widespread outcry against the government's monitoring of Americans' phone-call records. Two weeks ago in federal court, the ACLU challenged the legal rationale behind the National Security Agency program, arguing that the NSA's actions -- involving "data mining" of records provided by AT&T and other telephone companies -- violate Americans' rights to free speech and privacy as guaranteed under the First and Fourth Amendments. Last week, privacy experts raised questions about the U.S. government's monitoring of international bank transfers -- previously secret data surveillance officials say is justified by the fight against terrorism.Americans' rights to privacy will be tested even more in the next few years as biometric technology creeps increasingly into everyday arenas. For example, on the campus of UC San Diego, biometric experts are testing a soda machine that uses both fingerprint and face-recognition technology. The machine is in a lounge for grad students in UC San Diego's computer science building."The students are very excited about getting it working," Serge Belongie, a UC San Diego associate professor of computer science, says in a phone interview. "People think it's very cool. ... No one uses money. They have accounts. What would be fun is if (the machine) recognizes you and says, 'Would you like your usual?' "If UC San Diego students are reluctant to use the machine, their privacy concerns are outweighed by convenience -- a sentiment echoed in survey after survey on biometric technology. In March, Unisys Corp. released a report on public perception of "identity management" that said convenience and efficiency were the two biggest reasons consumers would use biometric technology. (The most preferred biometric methods are fingerprints and voice recognition, according to the survey. The least preferred, because of its perceived intrusiveness, is an iris or eye scan.)Two of the biggest turnoffs for those who shun biometric technology: suspicion of how the technology works and loss of privacy. Among respondents from North America, just 56 percent said they'd be willing to share their fingerprint with a government organization such as a post office or tax authority. Among respondents from the Asia-Pacific region, 71 percent said they'd share their fingerprint with the government."As consumer confidence grows in the large-scale usage of (biometric technology) and standards are more generally comfortably adopted, you're going to see a pretty rapid migration" to it, says Mark Cohn, Unisys vice president for homeland security solutions.Cohn, a principal architect of the Department of Homeland Security's US-VISIT Exit system, which uses fingerprint technology to run background checks on visa applicants and verify their entry to and arrival from the United States, says Malaysia offers a preview of how the United States may change in the coming years.Since 2001, the Malay government has issued a biometric "multipurpose card" to Malaysians 12 years and older. The card, which features a thumbprint and photograph, acts as a passport, driver's license, ATM card, toll and parking pass, and medical record that lists blood type and any allergies.The card is convenient to use -- but it's a nightmare for Malaysians who lose it or have it stolen. Crime syndicates in Malaysia have altered cards with different photographs and used them to give members new identities, though the Malay government insists these identity thieves can't access the original cardholders' personal information. Special chip technology and other password features prevent this, they say. Also, the cardholder's fingerprint -- rather than being visible on the card -- is encrypted in the card itself: To reveal the fingerprint, the card must be inserted into a special biometric device that compares the encrypted print with that of the person claiming to be the cardholder.For anyone who has read Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four," where "telescreens" keep track of people's lives, this new biometric technology will seem like fiction come to life. It's showing up everywhere. By the end of this year, U.S. passport agencies hope to issue "electronic passports" with computer chips that have digital photos of the holders. With the help of face-recognition machines, airport security can compare a photo with the face of the passport holder. For two years, an American corporation, VeriChip, has sold government-approved electronic chips that are inserted under people's skin to give doctors instant access to patients' medical histories.In 2008, as mandated by the Real ID Act, states plan to issue driver's licenses linked to a database that includes each license holder's photo and Social Security number. These licenses (civil liberties groups call them national identity cards) will likely include a biometric photo of the driver accessible by authorities.In the meantime, banks are considering using iris scans and even palm scans at ATMs in an effort to cut down on fraud. (In 1999, Bank United in Texas adopted iris-scan technology at three of its ATMs in a test that was discontinued when Washington Mutual took over the bank.)Some people love the new technology. Others shun it.Pay By Touch admits it has encountered some resistance among shoppers it approached in supermarkets that already use the company's fingerprint service. But Morris, its president, says many of these customers are quickly won over by the convenience of Pay By Touch, which is free for consumers, and that the company keeps data points based on users' fingerprints, not actual fingerprints. So far, supermarkets in 40 states use the Pay By Touch system.Pay By Touch, which is based in San Francisco, wouldn't say which Bay Area supermarket chain will start using its fingerprint system in the next four months -- only that the chain will use the system in just a handful of its Bay Area stores. Pay By Touch users sign up voluntarily and are under no obligation to use it at the checkout line.Pay By Touch says it takes great care to safeguard its users' data. After fingerprints are converted into algorithms, they're encrypted, then stored in IBM computers. Those algorithms can't be reconverted into an exact copy of the fingerprint, though Pay By Touch may eventually store users' actual fingerprints if the technology improves, Morris says. The company insists it will never sell users' personal information or fingerprints to anyone else -- a pledge that's backed up in writing when users sign up with the company. But what if federal authorities, citing national security, insist on the finger scan and payment history of a Pay By Touch user?Pam Dixon, who heads the World Privacy Forum, a public research group, went to Chicago to warn potential Pay By Touch users about possible dangers."It didn't stick," she says. "People were (more) concerned with (convenience than) the potential risks. People can put their thumb on a pad and be done with it. But meanwhile, their biometric data is sitting with another company, a third party, that's subject to subpoena. One argument that I made: Let's say that every supermarket in the country, particularly the large chains, (use) a biometric payment system. It's a law enforcement dream because who needs a biometric database run by the U.S. government when you've got one being run by private companies?"Citing the recent disclosure by the Veterans Administration, which said a computer with credit information on millions of veterans had been stolen, Dixon says, "The second issue is information security. If the VA can't keep its records secure, which is a government agency that has all sorts of strict controls that are supposed to be in place, how on Earth can a private company without the resources of something like the VA manage to keep something secure? When we have a credit card stolen, we can call the credit card company and say, 'Give me a new number.' But you can't do that with your biometric. You can't say, 'Give me a new fingerprint.' "Morris dismisses such concerns, saying that Pay By Touch will actually decrease the likelihood that consumers' credit information is stolen or misappropriated. "I think (Pay By Touch users) get pretty rapidly that it's the ultimate way to secure their private data," he says. "It connects (their accounts) to something that's uniquely them, as opposed to handing a credit card over to a stranger or writing a personal check that seven or eight humans touch before it gets in their statement. Securing information by a biometric is a giant leap forward. (Users) like that they don't have to pull their card out anymore. They (tell us they) like that they don't have to carry their (purses or wallets) through the parking lot of an urban supermarket. There's a physical security benefit. Their numbers are never displayed. The safety of securing their data is the No. 1 thing they like."The marketplace will determine whether the public is ready to accept commercial fingerprint identification. Investors in Pay By Touch believe that day is here, capitalizing the company with $190 million in the past 12 months. More than 2.5 million shoppers already use the Pay By Touch system. Morris envisions a day when all stores -- even mom-and-pop ones -- offer a Pay By Touch option.Soon, customers will be able to use Pay By Touch from home with the help of fingerprint readers attached to their computers. High-Efficiency Generators for Hybrid Vehicles
Free-piston engines could be used to generate electricity as efficiently as, and less expensively than, fuel cells.An unconventional engine design is attracting attention as a potential alternative to hydrogen fuel cells or conventional engines in some hybrid vehicles. Called the free-piston engine, it could be used to generate electricity as efficiently as fuel cells yet cost less.Free-piston engines aren't new: they were invented in the 1920s. But the increased recent focus on hybrid cars has led a growing number of research groups and automakers to start research programs to develop the technology. Unlike in conventional engines, there is no mechanical connection between the piston and a crankshaft (hence the name free-piston). Since the design allows for improved combustion and less friction, the engines could be far more efficient in generating electricity than either conventional generators or newer fuel-cell technology.Having a cheap and efficient way to generate electricity is becoming more important as automakers develop electric vehicles with onboard generators for recharging the battery pack and extending range. Such vehicles, called series plug-in hybrids or extended-range electric vehicles, are to be sold starting in late 2010. (Click here for a comparison of different hybrid and electric vehicle types.) The first will use generators based on conventional engines. But later models could incorporate fuel cells or other unconventional generators, such as free-piston engines.The potential high efficiency of free-piston engines gives them an advantage over conventional generators, and their ability to use a variety of fuels is an advantage over hydrogen fuel cells. What's more, free-piston engines don't require expensive materials such as the platinum catalysts needed in fuel cells, so they could be cheaper too.Automakers such as GM, Lotus, and Volvo have started to investigate the possibility of using such engines in future vehicles. Meanwhile, in the past couple of years, an increasing number of academic research teams have started developing the engines. So far, most have focused on computer simulations. An exception is a research group at Sandia National Laboratory led by Sandia researcher Peter Van Blarigan that has been testing physical components of free-piston engines. He is assembling a complete free-piston engine prototype, a project that he expects to complete within a year.In conventional internal combustion engines, multiple pistons are connected via rods to a crankshaft that, via the transmission, drives the wheels. Free-piston engines do away with the crankshaft: the pistons aren't connected to anything. Instead, two opposing pistons just shuttle back and forth inside a chamber. To generate electricity, the pistons could be equipped with rows of magnets that shuttle past metal coils to create an electrical current.Van Blarigan's experiments suggest that these engines could be 50 percent efficient at generating electricity--close to the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells and much more efficient than conventional generators. Free-piston engines are efficient in part because they have fewer moving parts than conventional engines do. The engine configuration also makes it practical to tune the engine so that the fuel in a combustion chamber burns very quickly. Faster combustion allows the engine to get more work out of a given amount of fuel, improving efficiency. It can also improve emissions.The free-piston design can also allow the engine to be instantly optimized for different fuels, such as hydrogen, natural gas, ethanol, gasoline, and diesel. Ideally, drivers could use whatever fuel is cheap and readily available.The development of free-piston engines, however, is still at an early stage. "The free-piston has some unique features--simplicity and variable compression--which make it intriguing," says Gary Smyth, the science director of GM's Powertrain Systems Research Lab. "But [they] also pose a number of challenges."Van Blarigan says that one major concern is the sound of the engines: the fast explosions are very loud and will be difficult to muffle. But perhaps the biggest issue is control. In a conventional engine, the movement of the pistons is constrained by the rods and crankshaft, which help even out any variations from cycle to cycle. The free-piston engine is more flexible. That allows for using different fuels, but it makes necessary some sort of active control mechanism to ensure that each cycle is the same: variations could cause poor performance and increased emissions. High-speed computers and the ability to electronically control piston movement in a free-piston generator (via the coils and magnets) could help engineers solve this problem.Whether the engines will be significantly cheaper and more efficient than conventional engines is unclear, says John Heywood, a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. "There's been enough development to say that it works. But with very different engine geometries, it's hard to work out just how good it is. Is it really better?" As research progresses, it will need to answer questions about efficiency, emissions, performance, and especially cost, Heywood says.Meanwhile, conventional internal combustion engines keep getting better, which could make it difficult for the free-piston design to get a foothold

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A new robotic suit could transform the lives of paralyzed people, giving them the ability to walk again.
The invention, known as ReWalk, acts like a kind of exoskeleton. It consists of lightweight, motorized leg supports and an assortment of intricate motion sensors.
Users wear a backpack that holds a computerized control box which helps the medical device recognize when a step needs to be taken.
"Standing changes my whole environment. I don't have to look from the bottom up. Now I am eye to eye with everybody," Radi Kaiof, who has used the device, told CNN.
Kaiof, a former Israeli soldier, was paralyzed from the waist down 20 years ago. He doesn't have feeling in his legs but is still able to move with the use of the robotic suit
With the assistance of crutches, which offer balance and support, people paralyzed from the waist down can walk, bend, sit and even climb stairs when they wear the suit.
The futuristic invention offers an alternative to using a wheelchair for those who have functioning upper bodies and are capable of standing with the use of supports.
It is the creation of Dr. Amit Goffer, an engineer and founder of Haifa, Israel-based high-tech firm Argo Medical Technologies. Goffer was inspired to create the device more than a decade ago after he became disabled in an accident.
The medical technology that could help paraplegics do what was once considered impossible isn't available for purchase yet. The device wasn't ready for testing until late 2007 and currently is in clinical trials in Tel Aviv.
More trials are planned for the United States and Europe, and if the product receives the necessary approvals, it could hit the market in 2010.
The price of the device hasn't been set yet, but is expected to be comparable with the typical average yearly expense of using a wheelchair.
The robotic suit improves the quality of life of people paralyzed from the waist down, according to Goffer, who wanted to give paraplegics an alternative to using a wheelchair. It also benefits their overall health since it keeps their bodies active all day long, he says.
But when it comes down to it, the invention is all about helping people regain respect. Dignity is "the No. 1 problem" for people who use wheelchairs, says Goffer.
For Kaiof, the former soldier, the robotic suit has changed his life. Before he tried it on, his daughter had never seen him stand before.
When he stood before her for the first time, she couldn't believe just how tall he was, he recounted to CNN.

12. yüzyılda küçücük bir kasaba olan Moskova bugün 850 yıllık tarihiyle birlikte Avrupa'nın en büyük şehirlerinden biridir. Başkent oluşu 15. yy Çar 3.Ivan dönemine rast gelir. Dönemin en ünlü yapıtları Kremlin Sarayı, Novodevichy, Donskoy, Danilovsky, Simonov, Novospassky, Andronnikov bu devirde inşa edilmiştir.

18. yüzyılda I. Peter'in hükümdarlığı sırasında, Moskova şehri bilim ve sanatta büyük ilerlemeler kaydetmiştir. 1755'te Moskova üniversitesi açılmış ve 1703 te ilk gazete olan Vedomosti çıkartılmıştır.

19. yy' da Moskova, ekonominin, hükümet ve politikanın merkezi haline geliyor. Hatta ünlü Napolyon bile Moskova için şöyle demiştir : ''Eğer Kiev'i alırsam Rusya'nın ayaklarını fethetmiş olurum, eğer St. Peterburg'u alırsam Rusya'yı başından fethetmiş olurum ama eğer Moskova'yı alırsam Rusya'yı kalbinden fethetmiş olurum.''
Rusya'nın tarihini anlatmaya sayfalar yetmiyor aslında fakat birkaç ana başlık vermek gerekirse; Rusya'da yaşanan gelişmeleri 4 ana başlık altında toplayabiliriz. Birincisi 1500-1800 yılları arasında Rus Çarı Ivan'ın döneminde Ruslar'ın Karadeniz de dahil olmak üzere Kafkaslar ve Hazar bölgesinde hakimiyet sağlamak üzere izledikleri politika ve siyasi gelişmeler.
1800-1917 yılları arasında ortaya çıkan Slavizm görüşü. Bu görüş Balkanlar'da yaşayan tüm Slovak'ları aynı çatı altında toplamayı ön görüyordu.
1917-1991 yılları arasında Kapitalizme karşı öne sürülmüş bir alternatif olarak ortaya çıkan Komünist dönem söz konusudur. Rusya, bu dönemde büyük dünya hakimiyetini bir ideolojinin, yani komünizmin bayrağı altında sürdürme çabasına girmiştir.

Dördüncü aşama ise 1980'li yılların ortalarında başlıyor. Yeniden yapılanma, açıklık politikası ve ardından SSCB'nin dağılması ve yerini bugünkü Rusya'ya bırakması. 2001 yılı itibariyle Rusya 47 yaşında, Almanca bilen, Doğu Almanya'da KGB adına çalışmış, genç başbakanıyla yeni bir portre çiziyor. Putin Rusya'ya ve Rus halkına onurunu geri veren kişi olarak algılanıyor. Birinci önceliği, demokrasi ve pazar ekonomisi değil; yolsuzluklarla ve mafyayla savaşmak. Yeni bir hukuk düzeni kurmak.

Fifth Avenue where the Shadyside Inn Suites is located was once known as Millionaires Road. Along a mile stretch of the road Pittsburgh's most talented built mansions along the tree lined roads. Being only about 3 1/2 miles from the heart of downtown Pittsburgh meant that these people could be close to work yet not live within the busy streets of the city. As the area grew there was a need for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Less than two blocks from Millionaires Road entrepreneurs and developers began inhabiting a four block area of Walnut Street. Avusturya'daki Güssing kasabası, bütün enerji ihtiyacını tamamen su, güneş, rüzgâr, bitki gibi doğal kökenli yenilenebilir sonsuz kaynaklardan sağlayan dünyanın ilk yerleşim birimi... AVUSTURYA'DA bulunan Güssing kasabası, enerji ihtiyacını tamamen yenilenebilir kaynaklardan sağlaması bakımından dünyada bir ilk... Yenilenebilir enerjiler, petrol, gaz, kömür gibi fosil yakıtların aksine; su, güneş, rüzgâr, bitki gibi doğal kökenli sonsuz kaynaklardan oluşuyor. Avrupa yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklar merkezinin müdürü Reinhard Koch, "Kasaba enerji bakımından tamamen özerk hale geldi" diyor. "15 YIL öncesine kadar Güssing'te halk, iş bulmak için göç ediyordu. Bir şeyler yapmak gerekiyordu" diyen Koch, yetkililerin, yepyeni bir enerji planını hayata geçirmeyi o zaman kararlaştırdığını anlattı. Böylece ilk olarak 35 enerji üretim tesisi kuruldu. AB'nin desteklediği plan uyarınca, ilk tesisler organik maddelerin işlenmesi için kuruldu. Bitkisel ve hayvansal atıklar kullanılarak ısı, elektrik ve biyodizel üretildi.AB yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları merkezi uzmanı Daniela Augustin de, ahşabın gaz haline getirilerek elektrik enerjisine dönüştürüldüğü santralın, dünyadaki tek örnek olduğunu belirtti. Santral, 2 megawatt elektrik ve 4,5 megawatt ısı temin ediyor. Bu da yıllık elektrik ve sıcak su ihtiyacının tamamı ile ısınma ihtiyacının bir kısmını karşılıyor. Bu yolla üretilen enerji, mazottan yüzde 30 daha ucuza geliyor.

Çok eski tarihlerden beri insanların yaşadığı bu ülke, M.Ö. 100 yıllarında Romalılar tarafından işgal edilmiştir. Almanya ile beraber olan Avusturya'ya 803 senesinde Şarlman tarafından "Doğu Marklığı" unvanı verildi. Böylece Germen İmparatorluğunun bir parçası olarak kurulmuş oldu. Daha sonraları başa geçen Habsburg hanedanı, ülkenin sınırlarını genişletmişlerdir. On beşinci asırda Avrupa'nın ve Hıristiyanların en güçlü devleti haline gelen Avusturya, Osmanlılara ve Müslümanlara karşı arkası kesilmeyen saldırılara liderlik etmiştir. On altıncı asır başlarında yapılan saldırılara son vermek ve İslamiyeti yaymak gayesiyle Osmanlı Devleti çeşitli seferler ile 1529'da Macaristan'ı daha sonra 1540'ta Avusturya'yı yendi. Kral I. Ferdinand, Macaristan'ın Osmanlı Devletine bırakılması ve senede 30.000 duka altını vergi vermek şartları ile bir andlaşma imzaladı. Böylece Avusturya'nın saldırıları son buldu.Çeşitli savaş ve isyanlarla Osmanlı Devletinden ayrılan Macaristan ile birleşerek Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğu'nu kurdular. Birinci Dünya Savaşında parçalanan Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğu'ndan Avusturya harp sonunda Almanya ile birleşmek istemesine rağmen, galip devletler buna müsaade etmediler. Müstakil bir devlet olarak kurulan Avusturya Cumhuriyeti, İkinci Dünya Savaşında Hitler tarafından 1938'de Almanya'ya katıldı. Savaş sonunda Almanya'nın yenilmesi ile Avusturya; ABD, Rusya, İngiltere ve Fransa tarafından işgal edildi. 1955'te bu devletlerle bir andlaşma yapıldı. Buna göre Avusturya hiçbir devletle birlik kuramayacak ve herhangi siyasi bir bloka dahil olamayacaktı. Bu şartlarla bugünkü Avusturya Cumhuriyeti kurulmuş oldu.

DOĞAL KAYNAKLAR

Ülkenin aşağı yukarı %47'si ormanlarla kaplıdır. Orta Avrupa'nın en fazla ormana sahip ülkesidir. Alplerin 2150 metreye kadar olan yüksekliklerinde mevcut olan ormanların büyük bir kısmı özel şahıslara aittir.
Madenler bakımından oldukça zengin sayılan Avusturya'da demir, magnezyum, grafit ve kömür elde edilir. Dünyada en çok grafit üreten ülkedir. Petrol ve doğal gaz üretiminde Avrupa'da dördüncü sıradadır. Bunlardan başka bakır, çinko, kurşun, antimon, boksit ve tungsten madenleri de kafi miktarlarda üretilmektedir.

SİDNEY:Sidney, Avustralya'daki en eski yerleşim merkezlerinden biridir. Ülkenin ekonomik dahil her açıdan merkezi olmasına rağmen gerçekte başkenti değildir. Jackson Limanı'nın kıyılarında kurulmuştur.Sidney Botany Körfezi ile Pittwater arasında yaşayan Darut kabilesinin anayurdu olarak bilinmektedir. Bu sebeple burada tarih öncesinden kalma çok sayıda yerleşmeler bulunmakta; yer isimlerinin de çoğu bu eski yerleşmelerden gelmektedir.Sidney'de yaşam 1778 yılında bir sömürge kolonisi olarak başlamıştır ve şehir altmış yıl boyunca İngiliz toplumunun istenmeyen, suçlu kişilerini barındırdı. Bu kötü başlangıca rağmen Sidney şu anda dünyaca ünlü bir kültür ve sanat merkezi haline gelmeyi başarmıştır.Sidney'in orijinal yerlileri, buraya 18. yüzyılda gelen İngiliz askerleri tarafından zorla yerlerinden edilmişlerdir. Yerli halkın büyük bir kısmı İngiliz birlikleri tarafından katledilmiş, geri kalanların önemli bir kısmı ise genelde kötü çalışma şartlarından kaynaklanan hastalıklar nedeniyle kalabalık topluluklar şeklinde ölmüşlerdir.1788 yılı Ocak ayında Sidney'e gelen İngiliz donanması komutanı James Cook'un önerisiyle şehre İngiltere'nin aşırı kalabalık hapishanelerinden 759 adet suçlu getirilmiştir. Bu İngiliz donanmasının yerleşmesi sayesinde, körfezin kuzeyinde bugünkü Sidney kenti gelişmiştir.

Avustralya ismi Latince'de güneyden, güneye ait olan anlamına gelen Australis kelimesinden türetilmiştir. Roma uygarlığı zamanına dayanan, güneydeki bilinmeyen bir ülke anlamı (terra australis incognita) benzer bir yerin, ortaçağ coğrafyasında da bulunduğunu gösterir, ancak bu bilgiler herhangi bilinen bir kıta bilgisi içermemektedir. Latince'deki Terra Australis Incognita'terimi ; Güneydeki (Australis) Bilinmeyen (Incognita) Toprak parçası (Terra) anlamına gelmektedir.14 Mayıs 1606'da, Vanuatu'ya ayak basan Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, Güney Kutbu'ndaki tüm kara mülkiyetinin İspanya Krallığı'na ait olduğunu iddia etmiş ve kıtayı Austrialía del Espíritu Santo şeklinde adlandırmıştır.Flemenkçe Australische kelimesi de, Batavia'daki Flemenkler tarafından, 1638 yılından önce, güneyde keşfedilmiş yeni yerleri adlandırmak için kullanılıyordu. Britanya Krallığı'nin bakış açısını yansıtan ismine rağmen, eserinde Flinders Avustralya ismini kullanmış ve bu isim geniş kitkekerce telafuz edilen bir terim olmuştur. New South Wales valisi Lachlan Macquarie sonraları bu ismi İngiltere'ye yolladığı yazılı mesajlarda kullanmıştır. 1817'de Macquarie bu ismin resmi olarak kabul edilmesini önerdi ve 1824'de Britanya Krallığı, kıtanın resmen Avustralya ismiyle tanınmasını onayladı.

Templo de la Sagrada Familia

Katalan Hükümet Konağına bakan bulvarda yer alan Sagra de la Familia Kilisesi (Temple of the Holy Family) Barselona 'nın en tanınmış sembolüdür.Yapımına 1882 yılında, Villar tarafından Neo-Gotik üslüpta tasarlanarak başlanmış fakat Villar'ın gözden düşmesi üzerine 1883 yılında bu işle 31 yaşındaki Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) görevlendirilmiştir.Ölümüne kadar bu binanın yapına devam etmişse de Gaudi ,Sagrade la Familia Kilisesinin sadece (Kripta, apsis duvarları bir giriş ve bir kule) ön cephesini yapabilmiştir.Yapının inşasına Gaudi'nin ölümünden sonra, günümüzde de devam edilmektedir. Modernist üslüplü yapı diğer aynı üsluplu yapılardan Barselona'nın kültür zenginliğinin de etkisi ile farklılıklar gösterir. Bu farklılığın sebebi , kentin Gotik, İslam, Rönesans, Romanesk ve Bizans üsluplarını bir arada taşıyor olmasındandır. Yapıda diğer Modernist üslup uygulamalarında da süslemede kullanılan cam ve tuğla (demir ve çelik de Modernist üslupta süslemede kullanılmaktadır ; Art Nouveao) tamamen Gaudi tarafından tasarlanmış ve yerleştirilmiştir. Barselona deyip de Picasso'dan bahsetmemek olmaz. 1881 yılında Malaga'da doğan Picasso 1985-1900 yıllarında Barselona da yaşamış, özellikle de Barri Gotik ve Barri Xines bölgelerinden etkilenmiştir.Bu dönem içinde Empresyonizim ve Sembolizim üsluplarında çalışmıştır. 1900 yılında ayrıldığı Barselona'ya 1901 yılında dönen Picasso 1904 yılına kadar tekrar Barselona 'da yaşamış ve Mavi Dönemim dediği ürünlerini yaratmış fakat 1904 yılından sonra Fransa'ya yerleşmiştir.1973 yılında Fransa'da ölmüştür.Ünlü Ressamın eserlerinin özellikle erken örneklerinin toplandığı bir müze 1962 yılında oluşturulmaya başlanmıştır. Museo Pıcasso, 1981 yılında eşinin de Picasso'nun yaptığı seramik çalışmalarını bağışlamasıyla bugünkü halini almıştır.Ünlü ressamın 2,500 'den fazla eserinibu sehirde özellikle de Museo Picasso 'da görmeniz mümkündür.

KURULUŞU
Amerika Kıtası 1492'de Avrupalılarca keşfinden sonra İspanyollar, Portekizliler, Fransızlar ve İngilizler, buradaki yerli halkların aleyhine toprak sahibi oldular. İngilizler, Amerika'daki topraklarını genişlettikten sonra İngiltere başta olmak üzere çeşitli ülkelerden göçmenler alıp buralara yerleştirerek koloniler kurdular. 18. yüzyıl ortalarında, bu kolonilerin sayısı 13'e yükseldi ve bu Onüç Koloni, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin temelini oluşturdu.
Amerika kıtası insanlar için yeni olanaklar ve yeni bir hayat sağladı. Daha sonra bu koloni sistemi emperyalizm politikasına dönüştü. İngiliz kolonileri Birleşik Krallık'a endüstri konusunda hizmet ediyordu, İngilizler kolonilerden vergi alıyordu. Koloniler zaman içinde İngiliz devletinden farklı bir kimlik geliştirmeye başladı. Nüfus hızla büyüyor, tarıma dayalı ekonomi gelişiyor, iş adamları ticari ataklarda bulunuyordu. Dinsel yapıda da farklılık vardı. Avrupadan gelenler tutucu bir protestanlık geliştirmişti.

Kolonileri temsil eden alt meclisin üyeleri mal sahipleri tarafından seçiliyor, Krallığı temsil eden üst meclis üyeleri ise İngiliz Kralı'nın tarafından tayin ediliyordu. Kolonilerde yaşayanlar aynı zamanda mahkemeler kurmuştu ve İngiltere hukuk sistemini uyguluyordu.
1756-1763 yılları arasında İngiltere'nin Avusturya, Fransa ve Rusya ittifakıyla yaptığı savaşlar (Yedi Yıl Savaşları), İngiliz maliyesi üzerinde ciddi bir yük oluşturmuştu.İngiltere mali yükünü gidermek amacıyla yeni vergiler koyması, Amerika'daki kolonilerin tepkisiyle karşılaştı. Koloniler yüksek gelirler ödeyip, karşılığında hiç bir şey almamaktan rahatsızdı. Tütün ihracatına gelen ek vergiyle koloniler, 18. yüzyıl ortalarından beri kazanmaya hazır oldukları bağımsızlık mücadelesini hayatta geçirdiler. Savaşın başlarında George Washington, Thomas Jefferson tarafından kaleme alınan ve özgürlük isteklerini dile getiren Amerikan Bağımsızlık Bildirgesi'ni yayınladı.
Altı yıl süren savaş sonunda, George Washington komutasındaki koloni güçleri tarafından yenilgiye uğratılan İngiltere geri çekilmiş ve 1783 yılında 13 koloninin bağımsızlığını kabul etmiştir. Almanya Orta Avrupa'da Kuzey Denizi ile Alpler arasında uzanan bir devlet. Doğusunda Çekoslovakya ve Polonya; güneyinde Avusturya, İsviçre; batısında Fransa, Hollanda, Belçika ve Lüksemburg; kuzeyinde Danimarka ve Kuzey Denizi yer alır. Almanya, birisi Baltık Denizinde, diğeri Kuzey Denizinde iki adaya sahiptir. Baltık Denizindeki Fehmarn Adası 185 km2, kuzeyinde bulunan Sylt Adası ise 99 kilometrekaredir.

TARİHİ

Bugünkü Almanların dedeleri olan Germenler, bundan 2000 yıl önce Ren Nehrinin batısında yaşıyordu. Germenler, savaşçı ve barbar bir kavimdi. Genellikle avcılık ve basit ziraatla geçinirlerdi. O çağda Romalılar Orta Avrupa'ya düzenli ordular göndererek buraları istila etmek istiyorlardı. Germenler Romalıların bu istila hareketlerini durdurabilmek için onlarla bir çok savaşlar yaptılar ve Romalıları yenerek Orta Avrupa'yı almalarını önlediler. Daha sonra Romalılar zayıflamaya yüz tutunca, Germen kabileleri sel gibi Roma'ya akmaya başladılar. Bunun bir sebebi de Hunların Avrupa'ya yayılmaya başlamalarıdır. Roma İmparatorluğu topraklarını işgal eden Germen kabileleleri Romalıların geleneklerini, kültürlerini ve hatta dinlerini benimsediler. Yalnız Ren ile Elbe nehirleri arasına yerleşmiş olan asıl Germenler kendi dillerini geleneklerini koruyabildiler. Büyük Karl (Şarlman) zamanında Saksonlar, Büyük Karl'ın 800 yılında papa tarafından Roma İmparatoru ilan edilmesiyle zorla Hıristiyan yapıldılar.Büyük Karl (Şarlman)'ın ölümünden sonra torunları zamanında Roma İmparatorluğu parçalandı ve dükalıklara bölündü. Frankonya ve Saksonya bu bölünmeden meydana çıkmıştır. Bu dükalıklarda mukaddes Roma İmparatoru seçilebilmek ve İtalya'yı ele geçirmek için asıl Alman halkını unutmuşlar, halkın bilhassa köylülerin toprak sahibi derebeylerin kölesi olmasına, kötü idare edilmelerine göz yummuşlardı. Bu arada papazlar da din adına halkı soymaya başlamışlardı. İşte tam bu sırada Luther ortaya çıktı. Luther, Roma Katolik kilisesinin eğitim ve ibadet şeklini şiddetle yererek Protestanlığı yaymaya başladı. Bundan sonra mezhep savaşları başladı. Bu savaşlar neticesinde kralların ve devletin gücü azaldı. Bu kargaşa ortamında Hohenzollerin hanedanından birinci ve ikinci Friedrich'ler başa geçerek Prusya Krallığını kurarak yönetimi ele aldılar. Daha sonra Almanlar, Avusturya ve Fransa ile birçok savaşlar yaptılar ve neticede 1861 yılında Prusya Krallığına Birinci Wilhelm, Kont Otto von Bismarck Schönhausen'de başkanlığa getirildi. Bismarck zamanında Almanya'nın kuvvetli temelleri atıldı ve birleşme sağlandı. Birinci Wilhelm'den sonra İkinci Wilhelm Prusya kralı oldu ve bunun zamanında Bismarck'a işten el çektirildi ve Alman halkı büyük silahlanma faaliyetine girişti. Silahlanma sonucu Almanya yanında Avusturya, Macaristan,Türkiye ve Bulgaristan'la ittifak kurarak Birinci Dünya Savaşına girdi. Bu savaşta Almanlar ve müttefik devletler, Fransa İngiltere ve Ruslarla savaştılar. Savaşın ilk yılları Alman ve müttefik devletler lehine başarılı geçti. Hatta Rusya teslim bayrağını çekmek üzereyken, ABD'nin karşı taraf lehine savaşa katılmasıyla Almanya ve müttefik devletler 1917 yılında yenik düştüler. Almanya bu savaşta sömürgelerini kaybettiği gibi, toprak kaybına da uğradı. Ayrıca 33 milyar dolar tutarında tazminat ödemek zorunda kaldı. Bu yenilgiden sonra, bütün Alman hükümdarları haklarından feragat ederek, Weimar'da yapılan yeni bir anayasa ile 1919 yılında Almanya'da Cumhuriyet ilan edildi.İlk Alman cumhurbaşkanı olarak Friedrich Ebert seçildi. 1925 yılında, Mareşal Paoul von Hinderburg Almanya'nın ikinci cumhurbaşkanı oldu ve yedi yıl sonra da Hinderburg ikinci defa cumhurbaşkanı seçilince, Adolf Hitler'i başbakan yaptı. Hitler başbakan olunca, bütün yahudileri Alman vatandaşlığından çıkardı, askeri eğitime ve silahlanmaya önem vererek Almanya'yı silahlı bir güç haline getirdi. Kısa zamanda bu gücünü daha da çoğaltarak 1936 yılında İtalya ile Roma-Berlin mihverini kurdu. Bundan sonra Hitler, zor kullanarak Çekoslovakya ve Polonya'yı işgal etti. 1939 yılında Polonya'nın işgalinden sonra, Fransa ile İngiltere, Almanya'ya karşı savaş ilan ettiler. Buna karşılık olmak üzere Alman birlikleri Danimarka, Norveç, Hollanda, Belçika ve Lüksemburg'u işgal etti. Bu arada Fransa korkudan teslim oldu. İtalya, Almanya'nın yanında savaşa katıldı. 1941 yılında Hitler, Balkan Yarımadasını da işgal etti ve sonra da Rusya'ya saldırdı. 1941 yılında ABD bütün askeri gücüyle batı devletlerinin yanında savaşa katılması üzerine Almanya ve müttefik devletler yenik düştüler. Bunun üzerine Almanya dört devlet arasında paylaşıldı. Fransa, İngiltere ve ABD'nin aldıkları bölümde Federal Batı Almanya Cumhuriyeti yer aldı. Ruslara kalan bölümde de Doğu Almanya kuruldu.1989'da Rusya'da görülen liberalleşme hareketleri iki Almanya'nın birleşmesini gündeme getirmiştir. 1990'ın başlarında yapılan anlaşma neticesinde utanç duvarı yıkıldı ve iki Almanya birleşme kararı aldı. 4 Ekim 1990'da iki Almanya resmen birleşti.

TARİHİ

İngiltere tarihi, 5. yüzyılda Britanya Adasına Anglosaksonların ayak basmasıyla başlar. Anglosaksonlar kendi adını verdikleri adaya yerleşip, 6 ve 7. yüzyıllarda birbirine rakip küçük krallıklar kurdular. Sekizinci yüzyılda Roma ve İrlanda’nın etkisiyle Hıristiyanlığı kabul eden Anglosaksonlar, Avrupa’yı da etkileyen bir medeniyet meydana getirdiler. 795’te başlayan İskandinav istilası 11. yüzyılın başına kadar birkaç defa tekrarlandı. Daha sonra Danimarkalı Büyük Knud, adayı tamamen fethetti. Anglosakson Hanedanından Edward (1042-1066) birliği tekrar kurdu. Bunun ölümü üzerine tahta geçen Harold’u tanımayan NormandiyaDükü William, taht üzerinde hak iddia etti. Normandiya kralları ve özellikle ilk Anjou’lu hükümdarlar Fransa’da geniş ve zengin toprakları olduğundan, Fransa’daki Capet Sülalesine bağımlıydılar. Küçük İngiltere Krallığı bir süre Avrupa’da Somme Vadisinden Pirene Dağlarına kadar uzanan büyük bir mülkün bir uzantısı gibi yaşadı. Avrupa ile ilişkiler İngiltere Krallığı ile Fransa Krallığını sonu gelmez savaşlara sürükledi. Bunların başlıcası 1337-1453 seneleri arasında süren Yüzyıl Savaşlarıdır.
Üçüncü Henry, Galler ülkesinde uç beyliklerinin gelişmesini destekledi ve 1170 yılında İrlanda’da “Pale” sömürgeleri kuruldu. Birinci Edward, Galler ülkesini fethetti. Etkisini İskoçya’ya kabul ettirmeyi denedi. Daha sonra 14 ve 15. yüzyıllarda İngiltere Krallığı birtakım sosyal, dini, siyasi karışıklıklara sahne oldu.
Monarşi otoritesini parlamento aracılığıyla millete kabul ettiren Yedinci Henry ve Sekizinci Henry (1458-1541) düzen ve birliği sağlamlaştırdılar.
Birinci Elizabeth’in uzun ve başarılı saltanatında İskoçya’da İngiliz etkisinde farklılık görülmeye başlandı. İngiltere Tudorlarıyla, İskoçya Stuartları arasındaki evlenmeler, iki geleneksel düşmanı birbirine yaklaştırdı. Daha sonra İskoçya Kralı Birinci James İngiltere kralı oldu. 1707 yılında iki krallığı birleştiren bir antlaşma imzalandı. Bu tarihten sonra Büyük Britanya tarihi başlar.
On sekizinci ve on dokuzuncu yüzyıllarda Britanya büyük bir sanayi devleti olarak ortaya çıktı. Bunun yanında çeşitli yerlerde kurdukları sömürge devletleri ülke ekonomisinin gelişmesinde çok faydalı oluyordu. On dokuzuncu yüzyılın başlarında Avustralya, Kanada, Hindistan,Afrika’da bazı devletler, Karayib Adaları ve Hong Kong gibi dünyanın büyük bir kısmına yayılan dev bir sömürge imparatorluğu vardı. Bu sömürgelerin bir kısmı 19. yüzyılın sonlarında ve 20. yüzyılın başlarında ayaklanmalarla yavaş yavaş bağımsızlığını ilan ettiler.
Yirminci yüzyılın başlarında çıkan Birinci Dünya Harbine giren İngiltere, harbin sonunda imparatorluğun en geniş sınırlarına ulaştı. 1929-1930 dünya ekonomik buhranı büyük ölçüde İngiltere’yi de etkisi altına aldı. 1922 yılında bir ayaklanmayla İrlanda, Birleşik Krallıktan ayrıldı ve 1949’da İrlanda Cumhûriyeti kuruldu. İrlanda Adasının kuzeydoğusunda kalan kısmı Birleşik Krallığa kaldı.
İkinci Dünya Savaşına katılan İngiltere galip bir devlet olarak savaştan çıktıysa da, süper devlet olma niteliğini kaybetmeye başladı.
İngiltere’de İkinci Dünya Harbinden sonra günümüze kadar pekçok hükümet değişikliği oldu. Muhafazakar ile işçi partileri arasında iktidar el değiştirmektedir. Britanya, Birleşmiş Milletlerin, NATO’nun ve AET’nin aktif bir üyesidir.
